Introduction
This section will go over the Smart Home project as a whole and how the different lessons will apply to the overall design. Teachers will begin by dividing a class into teams of 3 – 5 students. They will then challenge them to discuss how smart home technology could improve their home using Worksheet 1, and the Student Resource sheet (Worksheet and Resource SmartHome.docx). We will divide students into 2 teams and each team will chose their option for their final project.
This lesson focuses on how Smart Home melds environmentally responsible design with cutting-edge computing technology. This lesson explores the practical, scientific, and environmental issues that emerge in building ‘smart buildings’ that rely on ‘the Internet of Things’ Students work in teams using resourced technology to design, and perhaps later implement, smart home solutions to make their home a better place in which to live.
This lesson is designed to be flexible in showing how to implement the details. As discussed below, a student can use found technology resources from Ohio University depending on the student’s own expertise in using those devices. Available options are listed below.
- Option 1: Home Security
- Option 2: House Energy efficiency
Regardless of how simple or complex you make this lesson, please make sure you understand the technology you will be using. Each student group will be brainstorming ideas for their own project.
